This Is What Democracy Looks Like
Today's Note From a Madman
May 28, 2008
I know
the big story is former Bush Press Secretary Scott McClellan finally telling the
truth. However, rather than write exactly what everyone on the TV talkies are
saying (as we all stare at our TV's in stunned silence), I'm just going to make
this one observation today:
It appears that the Bushies aren't doing their usual, "He knows nothing about
us" and "He has an ax to grind" routine. In the case of McClellan, the tact is
to make us all believe that someone is putting the words not only in his mouth,
but on the pages of his new book "What Happened".
This could be the Bush way of giving the former loyalist insider a chance to
help their cause by coming out and saying, "Yes! I was lying! And the publisher
made me do it!"
Personally, I can't wait for the inevitable 60 Minutes interview which, no
doubt, will come soon.

Screwing Up a Sure Thing
I am a registered Democrat. Now, that's not to say I have never voted for a
Republican in the thirty years I have been voting. There have been people in my
town who, even as Republicans, deserved my vote. And they got it. However, the
vast majority of my votes have gone to what is now the Blue side.
The two parties which dominate American politics are represented by an elephant
(the Republicans) and the jack ass (the Democrats). More fitting symbols could
not be used for either of them.
The pachyderm which we see in cartoons wearing red, white and blue hats is a
symbol of a bloated party which has taken "us", the US middle class, out of the
USA. It is a party, and now product of its fat, wealthy and powerful elitists
who make up a small fraction of the population but weave the now torn fabric of
our society and culture.
Over the past seven-plus years they have unwoven us with tax breaks for their
rich friends; sweetheart deals for their even richer global corporate
constituents and have bent backwards to remove any and all controls which were
put there by good men and women to protect the other 99 percent of us.
In other words, they did their job for their true constituents.
The Democrats, on the other hand, are also represented in true fashion by the
jackass. In 2000, we watched as Al Gore, for the good of the nation, no less,
refused to allow one Democrat in the senate to stand up and say, "Hey - there's
something wrong with this election here!" We watched as a brilliantly evil
Republican army moved down to Florida to make sure that each and every vote
wasn't counted and, in unison, we stood still and took it.
In 2004, John Kerry allowed his two bronze stars, one gold star and three purple
hearts get trumped by George W, Bush's desertion of his cushy Texas-Alabama Air
National Guard duty. We listened for Kerry's words after accusations were made
by his successor in the swift boat that he - Kerry - wasn't actually a hero even
in spite of the words of his crew and of the man who's life he saved. we waited
for John Kerry, the 2004 Democratic nominee for President, to say something -
anything - to clear his good name. An old fashioned "How dare he!" would have
sufficed.
But we got nothing.
And in that same year of 2004, we watched as gay marriage became an issue. It
was an issue better left for after a Kerry victory because it became nothing but
an additional distraction and yet another tool for the GOP brains, like Karl
Rove, to use against us.
And they did.
And it was a small, but vocal faction of us jack asses who insisted upon making
gay marriage an issue before we got the wrong guy out of the job.
And today in 2008 we're doing it again. You may make the argument that Barack
Obama, who now appears to be a shoo-in for the nomination, can beat John McCain.
But do we really need to bring up gay marriage. as they are doing in California,
right before the November election again? Couldn't this distraction have waited
until after the November election to make its place known one more time?
One has to ask oneself what jack ass move the Democrats will make this time to
snatch defeat from the jaws of victory yet again.
